Microsoft Mathematics 4.0
Microsoft Mathematics 4.0 is a free online algebra system with a friendly user interface and a step-by-step equation solver which aims to help students understand the path to a correct answer. Its powerful visualization tools also help to capture students’ imaginations and keep them engaged, allowing their comprehension to rise exponentially.
Mathematics 4.0 can help students understand mathematics, science, and tech-related concepts with powerful, easy-to use tools including a graphing calculator, unit converter, triangle solver, and equation solver.
Step-by-step solutions are provided for each problem, so students can learn problem solving skills fast and easy. An improved Computer Algebra System (CAS) helps teachers share and solve more complex equations and functions. It’s capable of handling many subjects, including pre-algebra, algebra, trigonometry, calculus, physics, and chemistry.
Handwriting recognition is also included, so all students can write out problems by hand.
Microsoft Mathematics 4.0 is part of the Microsoft Partners in Learning free online resources for educators and schools.
Project Maths resources on Probability and Statistics
A series of high-end complementary maths teaching resources directly aligned with the Irish Department of Education’s “Project Maths” syllabus and the Irish Leaving Certificate Exam are being offered by Alison (Advance Learning Interactive Systems Online).
These resources were created in collaboration with two Galway-based, Project Maths trained, secondary school teachers in partnership with the Galway Education Centre and the Athenry Maths Academy.
Currently available is Strand One of the curriculum: Probability and Statistics (Ordinary Level and Higher Level), an area found to be of traditional difficulty among students, and an area of increasing importance in the growing knowledge economy.
These are a complementary resource, not a replacement to in-classroom teaching of maths, and are made up of video lectures as well as interactive lessons from teachers and tutors from all over the world.
A Certificate of Completion is awarded to students who complete the full course.
15 Minutes of Math
Smartick is designed to aid primary school students in developing key math skills. 15-minute daily sessions form part of a sequenced study plan adapted to each student's progress.
Space Travel
What is the mathematics and physics of astronomy? This multimedia resource combines visuals with experiments to help students better understand the Solar System as a mathematics laboratory.
Teaching maths through innovative learning approach and contents
European Ministers set the target to reduce the average of students with difficulties in reading, maths and science in order to reach fewer than 15% by 2020. The project aims at investigating different ways of the mathematics representations, in the topics, already, defined in the PISA, IEA TIMSS and National surveys concerning the maths skills of 15 years-old students. The worldwide surveys report that European students often lack mathematical competence and key basic competences in science and technology. The learning of the mathematics literacy enables students to contribute effectively in actual society, improving their employment prospects. In this context, the project intends to develop with the teachers more attractive and fun pedagogical tools for the maths literacy delivered in two virtual environments: e-learning platform and 3D world. These innovative pedagogical tools are based on the topics defined in the PISA, TIMSS and National surveys in order to enable 15 years-old students to acquire mathematical literacy improving attractiveness and efficiency in the ISCED levels 2 and 3 of compulsory education.
The TALETE project aims at improving the quality and efficiency of education and training as follows:
- identifying and developing teaching and learning method in the field of mathematics with a focus on the geometry;
- improving the quality of learning in order to support the development of students’ basic and transversal competences (mathematics literacy, learning to learn, social and digital skills, English communication);
- improving attractiveness and efficiency of ISCED (International Standard Classification of Education) levels 2 and 3 of education and training (nearly the end of compulsory education) through the 3D virtual world;
- supporting high quality teaching and teacher training;
- supporting schools to establish partnerships and improving teachers and pupils’ skills favouring the integration of the European dimension in teaching and learning.
The impacts on the target groups are:
- - as to the students, to improve mathematical literacy skills (key competences especially in geometry), contrasting with the interest lack among students to start up scientific studies and supporting the development of the scientific and technical culture in European countries;
- - as to the teachers, to provide innovative contents strictly connected with national school curriculum in mathematics, in order to improve the quality of teaching making it more flexible and fun and reducing the number of low-performs of students.
Mathematical User-Interfaces Workshop 2012
This event will tyake place at the Conference on Intelligent Computer Mathematics
Jacobs University, Bremen, Germany, July 11th 2012.
Mathematics is being increasingly done on computers: from computations to communications, from static pictures to dynamic presentations, from organized texts to formalized demonstrations.
This workshop offers an international forum discussing how users can interact mathematically with the representations on a computer, how they can manipulate them to feel their mathematical nature, how knowledge can be communicated through computers.
This workshop is a forum to discuss broad questions of user interfaces for mathematics independently of a target application or target environment as the issues users face are often common.
We are seeking submissions of either papers on and/or demonstrations of user interfaces for mathematics. Videos, prototypes, mock ups and any other sort of demonstration are welcome! Proceedings will be online.
More information about format and schedules is available in the official Call for Papers.
The submission deadline is 23 May 2012!

STEM Annual Conference 2012
The Higher Education Academy’s first annual learning and teaching STEM conference will take place on 12 and 13 April 2012 at Imperial College London, one of the world's leading centres of excellence for teaching and research in the fields of science, technology and medicine.
STEM subjects are recognised as having strategic importance in higher education for the economy and employers. The student learning experience in STEM subjects is vital in ensuring sustained growth in the uptake of these key disciplines. Furthermore an excellent learning experience ensures that students have developed the right skills at the time of graduation and beyond through continued professional development. The Higher Education Academy (HEA) provides national leadership in developing and disseminating evidence-informed practice in learning and teaching in higher education; this conference will provide a platform for this for the HEA's STEM disciplines (for full list see below).
The key conference themes applied to STEM disciplines are:
• innovative practice in STEM learning and teaching;
• gender issues in STEM subjects;
• Mathematics and Statistics in an interdisciplinary context;
• work-based learning in STEM subjects;
• teaching and assessing large classes;
• assessment and feedback;
• employability;
• flexible learning;
• internationalisation;
• retention and success.
