Technology-enhanced Learning: ICT Call 8 Information Day
An event entitled 'Information day on technology-enhanced learning: ICT call 8' will be held on 5 October 2011 in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg.
The conference will focus on the technology-enhanced learning project proposals for the 8th Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Call under the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7).
Technology-enhanced learning is often used synonymously with e-learning. The main difference between the two, though, is that technology-enhanced learning focuses on the technological support of any pedagogical approach that uses technology.
The information day will aim to help participants to better understand the work programme and criteria for the evaluation of proposals, facilitate sharing of ideas and experiences, and meet potential partners for project consortia. The event will include parallel sessions on:
- adaptive learning systems;
- educational technologies for science, technology and maths;
- advanced solutions for fast and flexible learning at the workplace (targeting small to medium-sized enterprises);
- creativity in learning processes;
- exploratory activities and networks.

O presente Guia tem como objetivo apresentar e contextualizar, de forma sucinta e acessível, as mudanças provocadas na ortografia usada em Portugal pelo Acordo Ortográfico da Língua Portuguesa, assinado em Lisboa em 1990, e que se encontra em vigor, em Portugal, desde 13 de maio de 2009. A sua aplicação no sistema educativo português será efectuada a partir do ano lectivo de 2011/2012.
An adaptative learning system for reasoning about stories with poor comprehenders and their educators
An adaptative learning system for 7-11 year old children with text comprehension difficulties, hearing and deaf, is the goal of the TERENCE European project, carried out in partnership by organizations from eight countries in Europe. Adaptive learning means designing, evaluating and presenting the learning material so that each user can go through the material at his/her own pace.
The TERENCE project is coordinated by the University of Aquila in Italy, and partners AMNIN, Slovenia, the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, the Centre for Biomedicine, Intelligent Systems, Educational, Technology, Spain, the FBK Research Centre, Italy, the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Italy,the L3S Research Centre, Hannover, Germany, Moholy-Nagy University in Budapest, Hungary, the University of Padova, Italy, SIVECO Romania, the University of Sussex, Great Britain, the University of Verona, Italy. The development of children's capabilities to comprehend written texts is a key element to their development as young adults. Text comprehension skills develop enormously when children are aged 7 to 11 years old. Nowaday, more and more such children, hearing and deaf, have text comprehension difficulties related to inference-making skills, and hardly understand what they are reading albeit they can read the single words of the text fluently.
A few adaptive learning systems (ALSs) promote reading interventions, and none is developed for poor comprehenders, hearing and deaf. TERENCE aims at filling such a gap: it aims at employing stories for poor comprehenders as reading material, and tackling specific high-level cognitive text processing skills through adequate smart games for reasoning about stories. More precisely, the system's smart games, developed and classified according to specific pedagogical models, will stimulate children to reason about the events of stories, written both in Italian and English. The guidelines, the models developed, as well as the entire learning system will result from a cross—disciplinary effort undertaken in various and complementary fields of activity (art and design, computers, engineering, linguistics and medicine), while continuously involving also the project’s end-users- both children with hearing difficulties and their educators from schools in Brighton(UK) and Veneto region (Italy).
Moreover, the system will allow teachers to choose and custom-tailor the types of stories and games according to the needs of their learners.
In conclusion, TERENCE aims at offering innovative usability and evaluation guidelines, pedagogical models, AI technologies, and an ALS for reasoning about stories, in Italian and in English. The guidelines, the models and the system will be the result of a cross-disciplinary effort of European experts in diverse and complementary fields (art and design, computers, engineering, linguistics and medicine), and with the constant involvement of end-users (persons with impaired hearing and their educators) from schools in Brighton (Great Britain), and from Veneto region (in Italy). The project has been launched on October 1st, 2010, having an implementation period of 36 months.

At EC-TEL, experts and young researchers in Computer Science, Education, Psychology, Cognitive Science, and Social Science, as well as entrepreneurs have the opportunity to establish collaborations, strengthen their links and cross-fertilize their core disciplines.
EC-TEL 2011 will push further the Ubiquitous Learning paradigm by not only tackling the challenges of exploiting new trendy devices in various contexts, but also by investigating ways to meet and support formally and informally the learners in their learning playgrounds and social environments thanks to innovative scenarios.

Dundalk Institute of Technology Creative Media Research
Applied research is made possibly by a strong base of practical skills (in, for example, film production, drawing, graphic design, tangible interface design, media production, multimedia authoring, narrative writing or game design). The group is conducting a series of seminars, workshops and master-classes. They run every fortnight, since January 2010, with visiting speakers from industry and academic circles. To-date, the series has addressed the following areas: decision making and game theory, visual design, multimedia consultancy, graphic design, e-learning, and citizen democracy.

Online Educa Berlin, the world's largest global e-learning conference for the corporate, education and public service sectors, together with the UK-based consultancy Towards Maturity, invites HR professionals and corporate learning technology experts to take part in a unique benchmark study on learning approaches.
The study wants to uncover what learning approaches are making a difference in organisations across Europe, investigating what technologies are being used in corporate environments and what skills are most likely to be e-enabled. GUIDE International Conference 2011 “E-learning innovative models for the integration of education, technology and research”
The 5th GUIDE International Conference will deal with key concepts and themes related to the evolution of the knowledge-based society and the personalisation, accessibility and flexibility of the new e-learning models. In this context particular attention will be paid to quality assurance in the online environment, fostering the exchange of best practices, knowledge and experiences.
Pollen Spreads Inquiry-Based Science Education throughout Europe
Pollen was a European research and development project supported by the European Commission Directorate-General for Research under the Science and Society part of the Sixth Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration activities. The project began in January 2006 and lasted three-and-a-half years. The research team was made up of a consortium of pedagogical and scientific organisations from 12 European countries and was launched in 12 European cities. Representing all areas of Europe (north, south, east and west), the network addressed their research questions in a diverse set of local educational contexts.
