ROLE Software Development Kit

07 Mars 2013

The ROLE (Responsive Open Learning Environments) project provides technology to support teachers in developing open personal learning environments for their students. It centers on self-regulated learning so as to promote independent learners who can plan their learning process, search for resources, and reflect on their progress.

The ROLE infrastructure, including this Software Development Kit (SDK) enables a learner-centred Personal Learning Environment (PLE) that will empower the user for true lifelong learning across institutional boundaries, integrating learning with other parts of the learner’s social life.

Virtual Classroom Solution goes Social

07 Mars 2013

The new live online training portal, CloudRooms, from Redtray Solutions, is upgrading its new virtual classroom solution and going social.

The new social learning features in CloudRooms will make it possible for learners to rate their courses, post reviews of the training they've attended, share links to useful training materials available on the portal, ’Like‘ training modules in the Facebook style, and connect with each other through their message boards on the portal. These changes will make it easier for learners to communicate with each other, share their knowledge, opinions and also boost each other's motivation to training.

Last year, Cloud Rooms delivered more than 1800 live online training sessions. The interactive online classes were run by live trainers, and their popularity is what sparked the idea to make the portal more social learning-friendly.

Working Environment with Social and Personal Open Tools for Inquiry-based learning

06 Mars 2013

weSPOT aims at promoting scientific inquiry in the classroom by relating scientific concepts to personal curiosity, experiences, and reasoning.

weSPOT, a project supported by the European Commission, addresses several challenges to building personal knowledge, specifically in the area of science. It focuses on inquiry-based learning, in which the learner takes the role of a self-motivated explorer, and provides support for building these skills.

The main problem areas weSPOT tackles are the general lack of inquiry skills in students from ages 12 to 25, the dearth of technological support to bolster students’ curiosity, linking everyday world experiences to the classroom, streamlining e-learning with inquiry-based approaches, and measuring the impact of inquiry projects.

weSPOT’s main objectives are: (a) defining a reference model for inquiry-based learning skills, (b) creating a diagnostic instrument for measuring inquiry skills, and (c) implementing a working environment that allows the easy linking of inquiry activities with school curricula and legacy systems.

Validation of Non-formal and Informal Learning EC-Cedefop Seminar

06 Mars 2013

The seminar ‘Validation of Non-Formal and Informal Learning’ will take place on the 9th and 10th of April, 2013 in Mechelen, Belgium, and is open to 120 participants.

The event is hosted by the European Commission and the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training (Cedefop), in association with the Irish Presidency of the European Union.

European countries are increasingly recognising the need to acknowledge the types of learning that take place outside formal training institutions. There are still obstacles, however, to implementing policy objectives and practical solutions for validating the learning that happens in the workplace, at home, or in leisure activities.

This ‘Validation of Non-Formal and Informal Learning’ seminar will convene 120 participants interested in and involved with the challenges and solutions this topic presents.

Registration is currently open. For more information, please contact koen.nomden@ec.europa.eu
