The objective of the WEBD project is to develop a prototype distance learning environment over the Internet, suitable for biomedical and design engineering.
The WEBD project will use advanced distance learning technologies to provide professional education for biomedical and design engineers, since the opportunities for training, teaching and learning are very limited without the necessary machinery and lab practice. Both professions are currently experiencing shortages of professionally trained staff, especially biomedical engineering for which future employment prospects are on the increase.
The WEBD project will provide biomedical-training modules dealing with the principles, methods and materials and design engineering modules in 60-hour distance training modules. A coherent set of instruments will be developed for job and competence analysis and assessment, training needs analysis and training plan development.
These instruments will be tested and evaluated in companies around Europe. The final prototype WEBD web-based learning system has specific design features intended to help students acquire a deeper understanding of the problems, supported by laboratory and workshop practice, which is a versatile, low-cost information and communication resource.
