Katherine Janzen
Assistant Professor (Mount Royal University)

Working as charge nurse on an acute care orthopedic trauma surgical unit for 30 years gave me many opportunities to teach both staff and patients.  After working as a clinical educator for a year and a half and then completing my Master’s degree in nursing from Athabasca University in 2011, I moved to an Assistant Professor position teaching undergraduate nursing at Mount Royal University.  I have a wide range of research interests. These include the development of creative teaching strategies in the online and face-to-face classroom, women and addictions, learning, exemplary nursing practices, and creating opportunities for student-professor collaboration.  My research partners, Dr. Beth Perry and Dr. Margaret Edwards (2011), have been exploring the use of Artistic Pedagogical Technologies (APTs) which are arts-based strategies to help develop community, enhance authenticity, and support creativity in students in the online classroom.  Additionally I have developed a new perspective on learning called the Quantum Perspective of Learning (Janzen, Perry & Edwards, 2011). This perspective helps explain learning in the online environment through the use of exchange theory and applying selected principles from quantum mechanics or quantum holism to learning.

Les environnements d’apprentissage en ligne efficaces sont attrayants ; ils transmettent les notions de respect, de confiance, d’intentionnalité et d’optimisme (Purkey, 2007).
