University of Cambridge OCW language learning resources

07 Maggio 2013

The Language Centre of the University of Cambridge offers a range of Open Courseware (OCW) learning resources under the Creative Commons Licence.

Most of the OCW resources offered by the Language Centre were initially developed for the courses run as part of the Cambridge University Language Programme (CULP). The materials were designed for use in a blended learning environment combining ICT-based learning with face-to-face learning in the classroom.

The resources can be used for self-study, but for their most effective use they will benefit from a learning environment with some face-to-face contact.

Basic and intermediate Chinese, basic German and Russian essentials are currently available in the OCW language platform.

Serious Games for Situated Learning of Vehicular Languages addressing Work Needs

04 aprile 2013

The siLang project aims at enhancing language competence in the workplace leading to increased productivity in the context of virtual and physical mobility that is the norm in today’s open business environment.

The siLang approach differs from typical language learning practices. It embraces the cultural richness of European languages by focusing on effective communication rather than having all individuals use a particular language in a particular way. siLang objectives are achieved through situated learning and game-based approaches exposing professionals to typical uses of a lingua franca by both native and non-native speakers in diverse cultural environments. Learning scenarios draw upon typical business communication and integrate so-called transfer effects in pronunciation, syntax, and expression selection as well as culturally influenced communication norms.

The siLang consortium consists of the University of Thessaly (Greece), HiST Contract Research (Norway), the Institute for Research and Technology Thessaly (Greece), Universita degli studi Guglielmo Marconi (Italy), Tallinn University (Estonia), and the European Welding Federation (Portugal).

For more details, please visit the project's website.

eCuisine - A model for interactive elearning to enhance vocational conversation and arouse intercultural awareness

21 Marzo 2013

Selected specialities from the Austrian cuisine plus culinary “highlights” from the partner countries are described and integrated into an interactive learning program as well as into app prototypes. By this the access to mobile devices as used in gastronomy and catering is facilitated. Target groups for these apps are service staff, educational institutions and creators of menu cards

Increasing mobility is a characteristic feature of today’s world with effects for both, tourists and people working in tourism and hospitality industry. In a modern labour market facing the challenges and needs of mobility the mixture of language learning combined with the ability to make use of new media and technologies is one of the basics in tourism education.

Very often it is the quick/immediate response to “simple” questions, such as when ordering meals from a menu in a foreign country that initiates customer satisfaction and intercultural understanding. The project is therefore also intended to start intercultural curiosity. It will encourage those in the hotel-tourism sector to enhance the interest of students and their teachers in the dishes eaten in other countries.

The project emphasizes especially the following factors and points: reduce barriers to work mobility, increase international understanding and cooperation, a flexible delivery mode supporting modern learning requirements, an integrated approach to language and intercultural training, attractive and interactive e-learning materials supported by pictures to be produced and integrated by the users themselves to make their presentation individual.
