The European Commission makes occupational and geographical mobility a priority for future actions. In that context, early opportunities to acquire foreign languages are essential.

A good example of innovative initiatives in the field is given by the HLTCentral website that gathered on-line information resources about Human Language Technologies (HLT) and related topics of interest. The web site offers news, R&D, technological and business developments in the field of speech, language, multilingualism, automatic translation, localization and related areas.

Human Language Technologies RTD contributes to enhancing usability and accessibility of digital content and services while supporting linguistic diversity in Europe. It is part of the Multimedia Contents and Tools activity (Key Action III) of the Information Society Technologies (IST) Programme.

Behind the Gateway HLTCentral there are two EU funded projects: EUROMAP and European Network of Excellence in Human Language Technologies (ELSNET).
