My involvement with online teaching at Athabasca University began in 1999. I have been involved in coordinating the development of several online masters’ degrees in health studies and nursing. As a partner with Beth Perry and Katherine Janzen, I have been involved in both using and researching the role of art-based teaching strategies to develop invitational online classrooms that challenge and develop students. This research, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada is investigating the relationships between artistic pedagogical technologies (APTs) and interaction, social presence and the development of community in online course delivery.
Another research interest revolves around older adult caregivers and the conception of the negative effects of caregiving such as caregiver burden, burnout and compassion fatigue.
