M.I.T. Electronic Music Composition
What kind of music can a computer make? This M.I.T. Open Course on Electronic Music Composition explores the vast array of sound-making possibilities through computers. Students capture sounds from their own environment, and use it to compose sampled sounds, feedback, and noise, using digital signal processing (DSP), convolution, algorithms, and simple mixing.
Students complete weekly composition and listening assignments; material for the latter is drawn from sound art, experimental electronica, conventional and non-conventional classical electronic works, popular music, and previous students' compositions.

Why NetSounds: the potential of the music and technology binomial in education to the European educational system
This paper aims to introduce to the field, still almost undiscovered, of the joint action and the binomial of music and technology and present the achievements reached by NetSounds project.
The digitalized music, or composed by computer, or written on the computer, or recorded with a computer, allows thousands of musicians, graduates at the conservatory or not, professional or amateur, to experiment and play music like never before, recovering also the hidden meaning to “play the music” stored in French and English terms jouer and play.
In experiments in electronic music and digital arts as well as the many random innovations, based on tools and environments that the parallel technical development of computers and networks have produced in an increasingly frenetic way, we can read a series of phenomena with meaning and full of sense, indicators of an ongoing present, phenomena are likely to read political and cultural rights that are not of minor interest and that will generate additional phenomena in the coming years.
Studying these phenomena in order to inhabit and live them is the task of cultural institutions. Experimenting with new technologies, producing other technologies, generating more and more understandable environments to guide the students' minds to their creative use, is the responsibility of producers and industries.
Managing this change in a positive way for society and for the individual instances is the task of big national and supranational policies.
Digital competence and creative expression through the music constitute, first of all, an effective occasion of active and constructive transit in the space of “cosmopedia” and in all the other zones that allow/ask for creating, for innovating, for transforming in this vital space.
It is not only and simply an occasion for producing new music languages, sonorities never experimented, that born from the brand-new world of sounds of synthesis, but it is something more namely about the possibility to be able to think, visualizing the shape, the essence of the sound, an essence made of numbers, of nature, of the sounds of the origin and of the one linked to each new born.
This aspect of digital music, its being a frontier and a synthesis between manual skill and spirituality, between knowledge and emotions, technology and contents, its being field and limes of Pythagoras vertigo, of informatics and music one, make it an model and instrument of educational, didactics and methodological innovation that cannot be renounced.
The NetSounds project has been caused by those instances and reflections on how the digital technologies can change the music teaching and education and the impact that the application of these new tools can have in school and VET systems.
NetSounds intercepted this flood wave and acted in the only possible direction: to understand the phenomena that are taking place to generate positive institutional practices, that may affect patterns of access to knowledge and expertise in music education and training systems in public-private sector, in the direction of their adaptation to the real.
The Digital Children’s Folksongs for Language and Cultural Learning project
The Folk DC project is a European Union project designed to motivate young language learners to engage with language learning through using Folk songs, and activities around the songs, in 10 European languages.
Your students can take part in this motivating project that culminates in a simultaneous, live concert in 5 countries, streamed over the Internet to audiences all over Europe.
Introduction
The Digital Children’s Folksongs for Language and Cultural Learning project (Folk DC) is a European Union project designed to motivate young language learners to engage with language learning through using Folk songs, and activities around the songs, in 10 European languages.
The project culminates in a simultaneous, live concert in 5 countries, streamed over the Internet to audiences all over Europe. School choirs will sing folk songs in non-native languages that will be streamed to the other concert venues and also made available to an Internet audience.
The project will introduce an understanding of the number, richness and culture of other languages at the earliest possible age when children start to learn a foreign language and thus begin to understand the meaning of additional languages. It will engage children in a fascinating and engaging activities that will resonate in to the future and answer the need for materials that can directly engage and motivate children to enjoy their learning.
Resources produced
The “Folk DC” project will research and collect children’s folk songs in 10 European languages and produce a pedagogical toolset for teachers to use with their students that includes:
- Lyrics, translations, background story, music score, recordings
- Activities to stimulate children’s language and cultural awareness
- Singing practices to enhance musical communication
- ICT training for recording and sound effects.
The resources will be completed in cooperation with schools, piloted and perfected; uploaded on the project’s website and widely disseminated to schools as an Autonomous Teacher Training Tool kit (ATTT).
Schools will be able to use the ATTT and create audio and video recording of their school choirs singing the project folk songs. These can be uploaded on to the Internet and shared as an open source.
Five Workshops will be organized by the partner institutions for local teachers and teachers from other EU countries who may apply for grants to cover expenses. A Telephone Technical Support Service will be active for a period offering technical and content related support to teachers using the ATTT.
European concert
A synchronized Concert will be organized in five prestigious venues in London (UK), Adana (TR), Sastamala (FI), Prahova (RO), Madrid (ES). These will feature a local school choir, distinguished folk singers and a projection of the concerts from the other four locations.
Schools who cannot attend the live concert will be invited to view the concert online via webinar software.
Joining the project
Educators can join the project either as piloting schools, involved in the concert or just using the resources produced.
